Wine Where There Was War
An unsettling thing about my visit to Turkey was how unaware I was about the history of this part of the world.
Thousands upon thousands of people died at Suvla Bay during World War One. (Suvla Bay is where the dogs are that I wrote about yesterday.) In 1914, I learned, Turks defended their coastline from invasion by soldiers of the British Empire. The battle lasted for eight months. So many people died that Suvla Bay turned red, it’s said, and descendants of those soldiers hold memorial services here every year.
It reminded me of hearing about the Poppy Fields of Belgium, and it chilled me just as much.
